Series Six Part One costume index

Last year I wrote a well-recieved Costume Index for Series Five, as well as an Appendix for the minor appearances since at the Proms and such like.

A Christmas Carol
The Christmas Special marks the first episode of Matt Smith’s second season, for which a new costume designer took over from Ray Holman, who had created the initial look for the Eleventh Doctor.
With a new set of eyes in control, the costume has gone some radical but subtle revisions.

Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening
NB For this episode only, this jacket did not sport the leather elbow patches seen during series five (see right)

Shirt Window pane dress shirt with mitred cuffs

Trousers G-Star RAW Blade jeans in Spark Denim (waxy look)

Bow Tie Self-tied burgundy plain woven silk

Boots Black, unknown brand

Accessories The Doctor is also briefly seen sporting a furry Christmas Santa hat (see left, top), and then the trusty fez (see left, middle), before wearing a Tom Baker style striped scarf (see left, bottom)

Also seen wearing For one scene set in 1950s Hollywood, The Doctor wears a classic white tuxedo, with a black self-tie bow tie (but untied) white dress shirt and black trousers (see below)

Comic Relief
part one: Space & part two: Time
These two mini episodes from the Comic Relief fund raising night keep perfect costume continuity from A Christmas Carol.

Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening
NB. this jacket still does not sport the leather elbow patches seen during series five (see right)

Shirt Window pane dress shirt with mitred cuffs

Trousers G-Star RAW Blade jeans in Spark Denim

Bow Tie Self-tied burgundy plain woven silk

Boots Custom-made black boots

The Impossible Astronaut
Although not the first before the cameras, this episode debuts the finalised reboot of Matt’s Costume. The ‘dry-run’ of the new tweed jacket in A Christmas Carol now has the elbow patches added, making it more in keeping with the look of series five.

Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening

Shirt
Opening scene Window pane dress shirt with mitred cuffs (see below)
Rest of episode Pale-mauve striped dress shirt with tab collar

Trousers G-Star RAW Blade jeans in Spark Denim (waxy look)

Bow Tie
Opening scene Self-tied burgundy plain woven silk (see left)
Rest of episode Blue with horizontal bark effect silk

Boots Custom-made black boots

Accessories The Doctor’s attraction to hats continues with the omnipresent fez during a scene from the Laurel & Hardy film The Flying Deuces (see right, top), as well as a Stetson Hutchins 2X wool cowboy hat in stone for his introduction in Utah (see right, bottom).

Points of detail The bow tie worn in this episode is unusually a self-tie. If you look closely you can see the distinctive loop and end on one side with the end and loop on the other (see left, top).

The dress shirt worn has an unusual detail: a tab collar. This is two strips of fabric attached to the collar which meet in the middle with a button (or on this occasion a press-stud). The intention is to elevate the knot of a tie or the level of a bow tie giving it a more pert appearance.

There are also a couple of shot in the episode which give good views of the new boots worn (see right, top) and of the style of braces The Doctor wears, with four clips and a cross-patch in the centre of the back (see right, bottom).
Day Of The Moon

Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening

Shirt Pale-mauve striped dress shirt with tab collar (Note tab of collar is visible in shot above)

Trousers G-Star RAW Blade jeans in Spark Denim (waxy look)

Bow Tie Blue with aztec key design. Again, from looking at this photo (see right) it appears to be a self-tie
NB: This is a different tie to the previous episode, despite following directly on from it

Boots Custom-made black boots

Also seen wearing Just to be completist, I should mention the straight-jacket and heavy chains worn while The Doctor is incarcerated at Nevada’s Area 51 (see below)

The Curse Of The Black Spot

Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening

Shirt Pale-mauve striped dress shirt with tab collar and mitred cuffs

Trousers G-Star RAW Blade jeans in Spark Denim (waxy look)

Bow Tie Pre-tied burgundy plain silk

Boots Custom-made black boots
The Doctor’s Wife
Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening

Shirt Window pane dress shirt with mitred cuffs, seen previously in A Christmas Carol

Trousers G-Star RAW Blade jeans in Spark Denim (waxy look)

Bow Tie Self-tied burgundy plain silk

Boots Custom-made black boots

Also seen wearing While doing TARDIS maintenance, The Doctor is seen wearing welding goggles (see left, top). Previously seen in the Comic Relief special, they were probably sourced for this scene first.

Points of detail We get to see The Doctor’s burgundy braces a few times in this episode. They look to be the same as Series Five (see left, bottom).
The Rebel Flesh
and
The Almost People
Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening

Shirt Blue with mitred cuffs (see right, bottom) and tab collar (see lower down)

Trousers G-Star RAW Bronson Chinos in Black

There are a couple of good glimpses of the jeans in this episode (see left, top and bottom)

Bow Tie Blue with horizontal bark effect silk

This episode sees the return of the blue bow tie first worn in The Impossible Astronaut

Boots Custom-made black boots

We get a tantalising glimpse or two of the Season Six boots, but annoyingly in shadow (see left), so not much detail is truly visible

A Good Man Goes To War
Jacket Shetland Tweed jacket, with three-button fastening

Shirt Pale blue with mitred cuffs and tab collar (see right)

Trousers G-Star RAW Blade jeans in Spark Denim (see left)

Bow Tie Self-tied burgundy plain silk (see right)

Boots Custom-made black boots (see above)
Points of detail I am not 100% sure, but it looks to me that the pale blue shirt seen in this episode may not be the same one as worn in The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People.
This one has a VERY wide button-stand (see below).  Compare this to images from the earlier episodes above.

  1. I love your website. I've been enjoying this website for a while.

The Shirt he wears in the first 3 episodes of series 6 is called "Forzieri
White and Purple Striped Cotton Button Down Dress Shirt"
It is clearest in The curse of the black spot when he's wet around the end.

I also have some information that I would like to be spread. I will not comment it just yet because they have huge "Spoilers"

  2. Dosn't he wear brown shoes in the Doctor's wife & a good man goes to war?

    1. I think they are just dirty with mud from the quarry where they filmed.

  3. You're blog has helped me a great deal in finding where to go to find a lot of the items I need to make great costumes like the ones seen from the show. Living in middle of America, outside the big cities, there aren't a lot of people that enjoy Doctor Who or even know what it is.

My question whether you have any information on the blue textured bow tie Matt Smith wore in the first part of The Impossible Astronaut. He also wore it in The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People. In America, you don't see a lot of bow ties outside of a tuxedo shop, so I was wondering if anyone might have given you any information about it or where on the internet they might be found.

  4. @mokas "Button Down" in your case means that the collar has buttons and the one the Doctor is wearing definitely does not so I think you may be mistaken.

  5. Is this the Ganger Doctor's boots?

  6. I can't really tell if the dress shirt worn in A Christmas Carol is white or pale or what have you. Help?

  7. I would like to point out that the bowties worn by the Doctor are batwing bowties without the triangle at the ends. This is most clearly seen in the beggining of the impossible astronaut when the bowtie is untied and in the wedding of riversong when Amy hold up the Doctor's clothes and when the Doctor unties it.

  8. I would point out that the season six bow ties are definitely the classic "thistle" style. Easily seen that by enlarging the "clothes heap" picture at the top of the page.

  10. I really enjoy your website!
I think the pants worn in A GOOD MAN GOES TO WAR are in fact Chinos. Check the pockets.

  11. I recently bought a vintage Harris Tweed Jacket on ebay for $51.00... fits me like a glove! It's in great shape. The pattern is a little more like a Shetland Tweed. The fact that it's vitage just makes it look better than the replicas! Your website is amazing.
